The Children’s Cancer Institute
The Children’s Cancer Institute is a comprehensive program for children, adolescents and young adults (until age 22) that treats all types of cancer and blood diseases. We believe that patients are more than a collection of symptoms, and our philosophy is to treat the entire patient through a multidisciplinary approach to care.
The combined cancer program at Hackensack Meridian Children’s Health’s two hospitals – Joseph M. Sanzari Children’s Hospital at Hackensack University Medical Center and K. Hovnanian Children’s Hospital at Jersey Shore University Medical Center – is ranked #45 in the U.S. and the only pediatric cancer program in New Jersey to be ranked.
The Children's Cancer Institute is the largest pediatric program in the state of New Jersey.
The Children's Cancer Institute
The pediatric cancer program, through the Children's Cancer Institute, at Hackensack University Medical Center officially began on June 29, 1987 – a historic day because it meant that quality health care for children with cancer would finally be available in New Jersey. Children would no longer need to travel to New York to receive treatment for their illness. In addition to the creation of this new program, Hackensack University Medical Center was committed to growing its pediatric cancer presence.
Today, there are nearly 50 pediatric specialties represented at Joseph M. Sanzari Children's Hospital and K. Hovnanian Children's Hospital. Essential psychosocial support services exist throughout the Children's Hospitals.

New Jersey's Top Children's Hospitals
Hackensack Meridian Health, New Jersey’s largest and most comprehensive health network, is proud to announce that Hackensack Meridian Children’s Health hospitals are once again ranked #1 in New Jersey for the fourth year in a row, and top 10 in the mid-Atlantic region, according to the U.S. News & World Report Best Children’s Hospitals 2024-25 Report.
