Cindy Steele, M.D.

Dr. Steele serves as associate director of the Children’s Blood & Cancer Institute at the Joseph M. Sanzari Children’s Hospital at Hackensack Meridian Health Hackensack University Medical Center. She specializes in pediatric oncology and hematology with a focus on the treatment of high-risk and relapsed ALL leukemia and neuroblastoma. A member of the Children’s Oncology Group at Hackensack University Medical Center, she serves as the collaborating physician for the team’s advanced practice nurses.

She previously established the Pediatric Oncology and Hematology Division at Monmouth Medical Center, serving as its director. Dr. Steele earned her medical degree at the Catholic University of the Sacred Heart in Rome, Italy, graduating with honors. She completed a pediatric residency at Monmouth Medical Center, along with two fellowships, in pediatric hematology/oncology and in the Blood Bank Cytopheresis Unit, at Mount Sinai Medical Center.

Dr. Steele is a fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics. She is a member of the American Society of Hematology and the Society for Integrative Oncology. She teaches medical students and pediatric residents, conducts research and publishes in her field. She is developing an integrative medicine program in the Division of Pediatric Hematology and Oncology at Hackensack University Medical Center. Focused on the whole patient, integrative medicine addresses issues such as nutrition, mobility, and long-term effects of chemotherapy. She is also studying the influence of the gut microbiome in patients undergoing chemotherapy.

Dr. Steele is a co-founding member and secretary on the board of the international surgical mission OperationKids, a group of physicians, surgeons and nurses who provide state-of-the-art surgical and medical care to children in need around the world. This work has taken her to Morocco, Egypt and Kenya, where she provided hematology oncology consultations, general pediatric care, and triage of surgical patients with post-op care. She also held clinics and taught about the diagnosis treatment and care for many cancer illnesses and sickle cell anemia. The team performs more than 65 surgeries in a week.
